Forum Theatre:

case-studies-forum-theatre.jpgA government department wanted to raise awareness about inappropriate behaviour in the workplace in the context of sick absence. After an initial brief, we devised a forum theatre event, taking place over half a day. We provided one facilitator and three role-players.  Throughout the creative process our client had input and final say on script and casting.

We dramatised a 10-minute play based on a real life case study focusing on a character with early onset multiple sclerosis. The character had been off sick for several spells over the last year. She kept her line manager informed about her illness and her progress. When she returned to work after each spell no explanation was offered to her colleagues. This led to speculation and resentment.

This scenario was performed and used as a starting point for discussion and debate amongst the delegates who were then able to question and interrogate the characters about their behaviour. Delegates were then encouraged to offer suggestions for the role-players to improvise. This became a trial and error exercise and lead to a better outcome for all the characters involved.

Our other forum theatre events have been designed around

  • Sexual orientation
  • Domestic violence
  • Bullying in the workplace
  • Cultural differences between Norway and UK

Role-Play:

A government department was running a series of staff development workshops and part of this was dedicated to staff appraisal training.

We were provided with a detailed brief of a fictitious scenario set in an accountant's office. Candidates were required to appraise an under-performing member of staff. The role-player was asked to portray a top graduate trainee finding it difficult to manage their workload and unwilling to ask for help.

Over a 6-month period we provided a group of diverse role-players suitable to play the character. The role-play session lasted for 30 minutes, which included role-player feedback to the candidates on use of voice and body language in addition to feedback from the external assessor, an occupational psychologist.

Our role-players have also been used in:

  • Customer service
  • Assessment centres
  • Appraisal training
  • Medical examination
  • Interviewing skills
